Sharps Compliance announced the essay topic for its scholarship contest for the Fall 2021 semester. Sharps’ semi-annual contest awards $1,500, $1,000, and $750 scholarships to first, second, and third prize winners, respectively. Any student enrolled in a college or university studying a healthcare-related field may submit an essay and application to scholarship@sharpsinc.com.
This semester’s essay topic asks applicants to discuss the effects COVID-19 has had on long-term care:
The COVID-19 pandemic has disproportionately impacted nursing homes and other long-term care facilities due to high mortality rates among their residents, staffing shortages, and infection control issues. Proper segregation of pharmaceutical and regulated medical wastes within these settings is highly regulated but difficult to execute during a pandemic when staff is directing their attention elsewhere. Explore current recommendations and requirements for regulated waste management in the long-term care industry and how facilities can create consistent, simple, and compliant waste segregation methods.
The deadline to enter is May 31, 2021, and winners will be announced on June 22, 2021.
