Sharps Compliance College Scholarship Program Updates

Sharps Compliance believes in education and supporting the youth of the country as they pursue careers in the healthcare industry. We understand the financial challenges they face. Through our essay scholarship program, we award three winners twice a year (Spring and Fall) as our contribution to helping students with college expenses.

Each scholarship competition has an essay topic that encourages students to dig deep and research critical issues in the field of medical waste handling and disposal. They represent the next generation of healthcare workers who will be on the front lines helping to protect patients, the public, and the environment from improper waste and medication disposal. We believe that these topics encourage students to look more closely at hazardous waste disposal and take the issue seriously.

Recent essay topics include:

Describe the material wastes that manifest from different forms of COVID-19 testing and outline strategies to manage these wastes in a safe, compliant way.
Discuss how the COVID pandemic is affecting the long-term care industry and explore strategies that help facilities create consistent, simple, and compliant waste segregation methods.
Discuss how healthcare organizations can help increase the amount of clean, renewable energy generated when medical waste is converted into clean electrical power.
Explain why the recent EPA rule that “eliminates the intentional sewering of Hazardous Waste Pharmaceuticals (HWP)” is so important to the effort to keep pharmaceutical waste out of the water supply.
Describe how the recycling of single-use medical devices can contribute to healthier communities through reduced pollution and raw material used in manufacturing.

Sharps Compliance Scholarship Deadline June 16

The deadline for Sharps Compliance’s semiannual scholarship is Friday, June 16, 2017. Undergraduate students studying healthcare at an accredited university this Fall are eligible to participate. First, second, and third prize winners will be selected to win $1,500, $1,000, and $750 scholarships, respectively.
